How to Connect an Apollo Audio Interface to a MacBook

10/2/2025

Connecting an Apollo interface to a MacBook is not complicated, but precision matters. Skip generic USB-C cables and random driver installs—this hardware requires exact steps.
1. Identify the Connection Type
Check the back of your Apollo. It will either have Thunderbolt or USB. The label will say it directly. Do not assume all Apollo units are Thunderbolt just because the port looks like USB-C.
2. Use the Correct Cable
If Thunderbolt: only a certified Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable will work. Many USB-C charging cables are not Thunderbolt capable.
If USB: use the supplied USB-C to USB-A/C cable. Substitutes are unreliable.
3. Install the UAD Software
Go to Universal Audio’s site. Download the UAD software package that matches your macOS version. This bundle contains drivers, the UA Console app, and any plug-in management tools.
4. Authorize in macOS Security
macOS often blocks third-party audio drivers until you allow them. After installation, open System Settings > Privacy & Security and approve “Universal Audio.” Then reboot.
5. Connect and Power the Apollo
Only after installation and reboot should you connect the Apollo to the MacBook and power it on.
6. Launch UA Console
Open the UA Console app. The Apollo should appear immediately. If it doesn’t, the issue is almost always the cable or an unsupported Mac port.
7. Set Apollo as System Audio
Open Audio MIDI Setup on macOS. Choose Apollo as the default input and output if you want all audio to pass through it, not just your DAW.
8. Configure in Your DAW
Inside your DAW, select Apollo as the active audio device. Adjust buffer size and sample rate as needed.
9. Update Firmware if Prompted
The UA Console may ask you to update the Apollo’s firmware. Allow it. The process is automatic.
10. Troubleshoot if Needed
If Apollo isn’t recognized, test another Thunderbolt port, swap to a certified cable, or confirm your Mac model supports external Thunderbolt audio devices.
No license transfer is required for personal setup. The only transferable items are UAD plug-ins tied to an account, which matter only during resale. For a new MacBook setup, install software, authorize drivers, connect with the correct cable, and the system runs.
